Hitting two home runs in the championship game and a batting average of .614 are a couple of reasons Lucas McNew, a 13-year-old pitcher and catcher from Floyds Knob, Indiana is getting national attention.

He’s received several national awards the last couple of years, including All-American honors this year. With all the recognition, McNew remains humble.

“I practice like I play,” McNew said. “It’s an honor to have these accomplishments under my belt, but it’s also a lot of pressure. I try not to think about it. I practice hard and have fun, because the more I play the better I get.”

His current team, 12U LIDS Indiana Bulls Black, is ranked No. 3 in the nation by Baseball Youth’s Elite 25 Rankings.

“It feels pretty amazing to be on one of the top teams in the nation,” Lucas responded. “I think friendship is what makes a great team. And we have a good time.”

With fun comes hard work and a lot of hours. The Indiana Bulls team is made up of kids from across the state of Indiana, so it’s up to the player to practice at home on their own time to improve their game. McNew’s regimen includes hitting 300 balls a day and working on his mechanics.

“There’s always room for improvement,” his dad Kevin said. “I see him tilting the bat, and he doesn’t realize where his hands are. That’s why I wanted to try the Launch Laser.”

Kevin read about the Launch Laser in Baseball Youth magazine. The indoor visual swing trainer attaches to the knob of a bat and provides a laser as a reference point on the ground. This allows coaches, parents and hitters to reference where their hands are in a proper launch position. The launch position, where your body is just before the bat comes forward, is one of the most important phases of the swing.

The device is opening up opportunities to develop consistency in McNew’s swing.

“The Launch Laser has helped me improve my hitting mechanics,” Lucas said. “I’m just going to keep on practicing and hitting home runs.”
